Another great pop standard in that captivating, triple meter. The Sandpipers could be described as a latter day Kingston Trio or perhaps the Lettermen with guitars. At any rate they were a staple of Herb Alpert's A&M empire and certainly added to the repertoire of beautiful pop music from the 60s.

This is included in her Greatest Hits CD despite the fact that it never charted. In the early 70s, softer radio stations still considered the Beatles too "hard." They preferred Olivia's version to the virtually identical original by George Harrison. I love 'em both, but this is the one you'll never hear played today.

Okay granted, this was not a hit, but it was another example of a "soft" substitute. When Top 40 stations were playing Steam's version, this is what MOR stations chose, and I'm glad they did; this version (from the album, "Colours Of Love") is far superior. Hugo Montenegro was a master at not only incredible incidental music, but new and interesting arrangements of existing pop music.

By the 1970s folk music was almost entirely the realm of MOR radio and sadly is totally ignored by oldies stations today. This very pretty song was written by John Denver and sung by Mary Travers of the folk group, Peter, Paul & Mary. It just doesn't get much better than this.

Written by Bob Gaudio of the 4 Seasons. Charted at #22, but was a #1 hit on the Adult Contemporary charts, and it's no wonder...it's a beautiful song, and IMO a much better version than Frankie Valli's. See if you agree with me.

Melanie Safka wrote some wonderful songs, several of which were recorded by the NS. While Melanie's gritty, organic performance works well for many of her songs, the sweet, polished sound of the NS is more appropriate for a song like this, IMO. Not to mention that the NS produced a hit with it.
