I had one of my favourite holidays ever a couple of years ago when we visited the Lake District. The landscapes are mesmerising. This painting came from my imagination thanks to my experiences there.

I started the sky with a flat wash of Raw Sienna. Over this I put in some Ultramarine Blue. Before the sky was dry I put in some distant hills using a mix of Ultramarine and Alizarin Crimson but to be honest it wasn't nearly strong enough and I lost the effect. Before the hills were dry I put in the trees using a stronger mix of Lemon Yellow and Paynes Gray.

http://www.steven-cr onin-art.com The foreground trees are made up of various mixes of the sky colours. Amongst the trees I scratched out one or two trunks and branches with my little finger nail, trying not to overdo it. I made a quick foreground sweep with Raw Sienna and Lemon Yellow to reflect some of the light in the sky. The shadows are the same colours as the clouds.
